International Yoga Day 2016

The celebration of International Day of Yoga on 21st June, 2016

Mahatma Education Society’s Pillai group of Institutions observed International Day of Yoga in association with Soroptimist International Bombay Chembur, an organization that works for the welfare of women by conducting a yoga session for the underprivileged women who work as helpers at Dr. K. M. Vasudevan Pillai Campus. Yoga experts from Patanjali Yoga Centre conducted the 90 minute session.

The event was a grand success with around 50 women attending the programme. The yoga experts trained the participants on proper postures and showed simple daily exercises to maintain balance and flexibility. A series of yogasanas and breathing techniques were also demonstrated. The participants appreciated the class and enthusiastically practiced the various exercises.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Daphne Pillai, Chairperson of Mahatma Education Society and Founder President of Soroptimist International Bombay Chembur observed that “We are delighted to provide this opportunity on the occasion of International Yoga Day to build awareness among women to remain fit and lead a healthy lifestyle”.

In the evening, Soroptimist International of Bombay Chembur celebrated the International Day of Yoga with about 164 students of Mahatma Night Degree College of Arts and Commerce, Chembur Mumbai. The objective of this event was to initiate students to yoga and encourage them to make it a way of life for a healthy, peaceful and happy life. Soroptimist International Bombay Chembur Past President Dr. Padma Rangan in her welcome address explained the significance of yoga as it embodies unity of mind and body and is a holistic approach to health and well-being.

The guest of honour, National Association of Soroptimist International of India past President Annette Mascarenhas, spoke about yoga as an invaluable gift of India’s ancient tradition and how the practice of yoga helped her get back on her feet after a knee operation and cured her of cervical spondylitis. Soroptimsit Annapoorna Patil, the resource person, taught the students Pranayam (breathing exercises) and explained the importance of Pranaym. The students enthusiastically participated in all the exercises. Soroptimist Dr. Lata Krishnan thanked the students and Soroptimists for a wonderful evening of yoga.
