Visit to the old age home Rajiv Rajan Adhar Ghar

Soroptimist International Bombay Chembur visited the inmates of the old age home Rajiv Rajan Adhar Ghar on 3rd April ,2012 at Panvel.

The SI members spent about two hours with the inmates and interacted with them. They distributed snacks and played Antakshari with them. The"young at heart" ladies & gentlemen were delighted with the visit. Prizes were distributed to the participants who volunteered to sing. This was followed by some enthusiastic group singing by the Soroptmist Sisters. The Soroptimist Siters spread a little sunshine and cheer in the lives of the elderly with their warmth and enthusiasm.



Inauguration of Soroptimist Website..

Soroptimist International Bombay Chembur Club has a new web identity. Dr. K M Vasudevan Pillai, Founder of Mahatma Education Society that runs the 48 educational institutions under the banner of "Pillai group of Institutions" inaugurated the website. He congratulated the work done by the Soroptimist sisters and urged them to do much more for the underprivileged and urged them to adopt a school in one of the rural villages and nurture it. Dr. Daphne Pillai, Founder President of SIBC also lauded the efforts of all the Soroptimist sisters and said that this new initiative will help us network with other SI Clubs and forge greater bonds to do much more for society.


Health, Hygiene and Sanitation

Soroptimist International Bombay Chembur organized a Health Awareness Talk for underprivileged women of Dr. K M Vasudevan Pillai’s Campus, New Panvel and Pillai’s HOC Educational Complex, Rasayani on the 11th of August, 2012.
Dr. Suvarna Khadilkar and Dr. Vijaya Badhwar, two senior gynaecologists belonging to the Mumbai Obstetric and Gynaecological Society (MOGS) were the speakers for the session held in Panvel and Rasayani campuses respectively.
The event was a grand success with around 65 participants attending the talk at the Panvel Campus and around 30 women attending the talk at the Rasayani Campus. The experts spoke about the various changes that a woman’s body goes through at different stages of her life and other issues regarding reproductive health. The doctors spoke in Marathi, the local language spoken by the audience. The participants greatly appreciated the talk and actively asked questions and openly discussed their gynaecological problems with the expert. The sessions in both the campuses lasted for about 1 hour 15 minutes. They participants were provided with refreshments.
We are sure that in the future we will be able to make a difference in the lives of the many women we meet and interact with in our daily lives both at home and in our professional spheres.


Lamasa Workshop

A Workshop on 'Lamasa- Beautify your home and everything around ' was conducted by Ms. Bandana Basu for the students of Pillai’s College of Education and Research, Chembur on 22nd September, 2012. 50 participants attended this workshop and the facilitator, Ms. Bandana Basu taught them basics of Lamasa art. The students were thrilled to learn this new art and thoroughly enjoyed it. This activity was our first successful attempt to raise funds to support our upcoming projects.


Joy of Giving

The Soroptimist Welfare Association Chembur organized a mega fundraising event on the 11th, 12th and 13th of October, 2012 to raise funds to support their future activities. This mega event comprised of Raffle Draw, Food Mela and Jumble Sale and was held at the MES Chembur Campus. The funds collected from this will be used to provide financial and educational aid to a girl’s school in the rural area of Raigad district.

Awareness Talk on Illegal Trafficking of Girl Children

To commemorate World AIDS Day on 1st December, 2012, the Soroptimist International Bombay-Chembur Club in association with the Red Ribbon Club of the NSS Unit, Mahatma Night Degree College, Chembur organized a lecture by Mr. Anson Thomas on the topic "Illegal Trafficking of Girl Children" on the 22nd November 2012 at 6.30 pm. Around 250 students of the Night Degree College attended this talk.
During his one and a half hour lecture, Mr. Thomas spoke about the issue of prostitution and how many young girls are lured into this business. He shared with us many horrifying stories of young girls and their lives. He also very significantly addressed the boy students and asked them not to indulge in these activities to erase the risk of diseases like AIDS which is on the rise today.
Mr. Anson Thomas is a dynamic individual and state- level sportsperson. He was awarded the CNN-IBN & Reliance Industries REAL HEROS award for the year 2009 for women empowerment and for having rescued above 700 girls forced into prostitution.


Community Service Day 2013

The members of Soroptimist International Bombay Chembur actively participated in the celebration of Community Service Day 2013 celebrated by the Pillai Group of Institutions on 2nd February 2013 at Dr. K M Vasudevan Pillai’s Campus, New Panvel. Dr. Pia Keiding, Vice President of Soroptimist International, Brussels was the Chief Guest. About 40 residents of 20 NGO’s totaling to about 700 members were treated to lunch, fun activities and a concert which is especially being put up for them.


International Women's Day 2013

Soroptimist International Bombay-Chembur in association with Mahatma Education Society’s Pillai Group of Institutions celebrated International Women’s Day on 8th March 2013 at Dr. K M Vasudevan Pillai’s Campus, New Panvel from 3.45 pm to 5.00 pm.

Ms. Farida Lambay, a prominent social worker and Ms. Nitee Punde, a noted criminal lawyer addressed the audience on the occasion. An exhibition of handmade posters highlighting the joys of womanhood, the issues facing women in society and inspirational women, all made by the students of the various Institutions of Mahatma Education Society were displayed. This was an initiative to help sensitize the youth on gender bias, respect for women in society and helping end sexual discrimination in society.

Soroptimist International Bombay Chembur also used this opportunity to launch their Adult Literacy Drive for poor and illiterate women who work as housemaids in various homes.



National Association of Soroptimists of India awarded Dr. Daphne Pillai, Chairperson Management Board, Mahatma Education Society, Pillai Group of Institutions with the NASI ‘ACHIEVER Award’ for her contribution and excellence in the field of Social Service, Profession and Business on 2nd December, 2012.
