World Environment Day

Soroptimist International Bombay Chembur (SIBC) celebrated World Environment Day with the students of Sadhana Vidyalaya for Deaf at Dadar which was attended by students, parents, faculty members and staff of the School.

The SIBC members were warmly welcomed by the students on their arrival. All the members’ spent time with the parents and appreciated their efforts in bringing up their specially challenged children with education and confidence. Ms. Seeta Desai, a senior prominent SIBC member spoke on various environmental issues and explained the harmful effects of using plastic bags. Handmade cloth bags were presented to all the parents present on the occasion. All the children present were given pencil sets and crayons. SIBC has been financing the educational needs of Saniya Ganesh Jadhav, a 13 year old girl, from the school for the past one year. A cheque was handed over to the Principal of the school towards the academic fees for the current academic year. The function ended with a tree plantation conducted on the premises of the school. SIBC members sponsored some fruit bearing plants which were planted by the children and SIBC members. The importance of planting trees and nurturing the environment was explained to the students in a simple manner with examples and illustrations. The senior children were delighted with this initiative and promised to water the plants everyday and nurture them. The SIBC members also spoke with the shopkeepers adjoining the school premises on this initiative and spread awareness on environmental issues. This initiative is in line with the SIBC’s goal of raising a collective voice on environmental sustainability issues.




Adult Literacy Drive Project

Soroptimist International Bombay Chembur (SIBC) launched its project “Adult Literacy Drive” on 30th August, 2013 at Mahatma Education Society’s Chembur Campus to mark “Literacy Day” which is celebrated all over the world on 8th September.

The session was attended by 70 women participants. The beneficiaries of the Adult Literacy Drive are women who belong to the poorer sections of society and work as domestic help in the nearby localities of Chembur, Govandi and Mankhurd. The modules are specifically designed to meet their education needs by including a mix of functional literacy skills, numerical skills and job oriented skills that will empower them to increase their earnings and upgrade their standard of living. Classes will be held on two days of the week for about two hours each in the evenings as per the convenience of the participants.



Talk on Child Sexual Abuse

SIBC in assocaiton with DPGA, Panvel organised a talk on "Child Sexual Abuse" by noted social activist and national award winning author, Pinki Virani for the teachers and parents on 14th September 2013. As a prevalent evil of society, it is appropriate that we raise awareness of the consequences of this heinous crime by educating adults – and through them, the children -- about simple steps to prevent, recognize and react responsibly to the reality of child sexual abuse. The session was attended by more than 200 parents and teachers. Ms. Virani spoke about the impact of sexual abuse on children and how parents must be proactive in creating an open environment at home where children can speak about such issues in a conducive manner. The talk was appreciated by all present.




Friendship Day 2013

SIBC joined Soroptimists' all over the world to celebrate Friendship Day by organizing a Fellowship Meet at Franav Farms in October 2013. The day was spent in bonding and forging friendships and spreading happiness the Soroptimist way. All the members wholeheartedly participated in the games and fun activities. The hospitality arrangements were made by Founder President Dr. Daphne Pillai. The day reinforced our commitment to work harder in the true spirit of Soroptimism



Health Awareness Talk - Oct 2013

SIBC organised a Health Awareness Talk by Dr. Vijaya Badhwar, a leading gynecologist and Head of the Department of D.Y. Patil Hospital, for 40 underprivileged women at Chembur English High School on 25th October 2013. The talk was very informative and covered the areas of women health, hygiene and sanitation. Dr. Badhwar also spoke at length about prevention of cervical and breast cancer and explained various methods to detect early signs of these diseases. The participants were delighted with the talk and asked many questions which were addressed by Dr. Badhwar.



Newspaper Drive

A newspaper drive was conducted by the students of Dr. Pillai Global Academy, New Panvel and Gorai on 3rd December and 16th December respectively to raise funds to support the "Adult Literacy Drive Project" undertaken by Soroptimist International Bombay Chembur.



International Women's Day 2014

On 8th March 2014, members of Soroptimist International Bombay Chembur joined women all over the world to celebrate International Women's Day. It was a proud moment when the "Certificates of Achievement" were distributed to twenty underprivileged women who completed the first level of reading and writing skills under the Adult Literacy Drive Project launched by the Club on the occasion of International Literacy Day on 8th September 2013. Classes were conducted by the Soroptimists' members twice a week every month from September 2013 to February 2014. The participants were the poor and disadvantaged women from the nearby slum areas who had expressed a desire to learn.

Mr. Blaize D'souza, (Operations Manager at St. Jude India ChildCare Centre) was the Chief Guest of the function and spoke about the importance of self worth and self esteem and encouraged the new learners to think positive and be an achiever.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Daphne Pillai, Founder President, Soroptimist International Bombay Chembur mentioned that it was very fulfilling to see these underprivileged women smiling and confident due to their learning achievements and encouraged all Soroptimists' to continue this wonderful work of spreading literacy among the poor women.



Joy of Giving Week

The Soroptimist Welfare Association Chembur organized a Food Mela and Jumble Sale from the 24th to 26th October, 2013 to raise funds to support the various charitable activities conducted by the Association. This mega event was held at the MES Chembur Campus and attracted a huge crowd and was well received. Ms. Parveen Arif, Dr. Lata Krishnan & Ms. Mamta Patil were the co-ordinators of the event. Over 160 people from in and around Chembur Naka attended the Inaugural function on 24 October 2013 and enjoyed the mini lunch, snacks and kulfi sold at the Food Mela. Visitors were excited about purchasing well-maintained, used clothes, home articles, jewelry, shoes, bags and toys. The air was filled with excitement and hearts filled with the joy of giving.
