On 5th April 2024, Soroptimist International Bombay Chembur in association with Pillai Institute of Management Studies and Research organised a Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Awareness Drive for school students of class 6th to 9th of the Mahatma International School with the objective of instilling compassion, empathy and understanding towards animals. The drive included various interactive sessions, skits, question-and-answer rounds, and discussions. The event sought to educate students about the importance of animal welfare, legal protections, responsible care and advocacy for animal rights. A thought-provoking skit was performed by volunteers, illustrating real-life scenarios where animals are in need of care and compassion. The skit emphasized the emotional and physical needs of animals and encouraged students to empathize with their plight. Following the skit, a dynamic question and answer session took place, allowing students to raise queries and concerns related to animal welfare. This was followed with an interactive discussion to encourage students to share their thoughts, experiences and ideas about animals and their welfare. Students were encouraged to reflect on their own interactions with animals and explore ways they could contribute positively to improving their well-being.

The drive emphasized the significance of compassion and empathy towards animals, highlighting that they too have emotions and deserve to be treated with kindness and respect. The concept of animal welfare, which encompasses providing proper care, shelter, and nutrition to animals, as well as ensuring their physical and emotional well-being was explained. The legal framework for Animal Protection for safeguarding animals from cruelty and abuse was emphasised. Guidance on responsible Feeding and Care was also provided. The Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Awareness Drive served as a platform to educate and inspire students to develop compassion, empathy, and a sense of responsibility towards animals. The Drive was a resounding success in encouraging students to become the “VOICE FOR THE VOICELESS”. This activity was coordinated by SIBC member Dr. Celina Joy, Prof. Krushna Sawant of PiMSR and 9 students from the Social Service Committee of PiMSR. 150 students of Mahatma International School, CBSE attended this session along with 12 teachers.
