International Women’s Day 2014
On 8th March 2014, members of Soroptimist International Bombay Chembur joined women all over the world to celebrate International Women’s Day. It was a proud moment when the “Certificates of Achievement” were distributed to twenty underprivileged women who completed the first level of reading and writing skills under the Adult Literacy Drive Project launched by the Club on the occasion of International Literacy Day on 8th September, 2013. Classes were conducted by the Soroptimists’ members twice a week every month from September 2013 to February 2014. The participants were the poor and disadvantaged women from the nearby slum areas who had expressed a desire to learn.
Mr. Blaize D’souza, (Operations Manager at St. Jude India ChildCare Centre) was the Chief Guest of the function and spoke about the importance of self worth and self esteem and encouraged the new learners to think positive and be an achiever.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Daphne Pillai, Founder President, Soroptimist International Bombay Chembur mentioned that it was very fulfilling to see these underprivileged women smiling and confident due to their learning achievements and encouraged all Soroptimists’ to continue this wonderful work of spreading literacy among the poor women.
