Soroptimist International Bombay Chembur in association with Mahatma Education Society’s Pillai group of Institutions organized a WALK on 9th December 2017 to observe two international days declared by United Nations viz. the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women (November 25) and World Human Rights Day (December 10). Over 300 students, faculty and staff of the Pillai Campus enthusiastically participated in the Walk carrying colourful posters, placards and banners. The Walk commenced from Dr. K. M. Vasudevan Pillai Campus, Panvel and completed a four km route ending at Mahatma School of Academics & Sports, Khanda Colony at 4:15 p.m.

The Walk was flagged off by Dr. Daphne Pillai, (Founder-Soroptimist International Bombay Chembur and Secretary – Mahatma Education Society’s Management Board) at 3 pm on 9th December 2017. Speaking at the event, Dr. Pillai said, “Violence against women is one of the biggest forms of abuse of human rights. People should be sensitized on the alarming rise of atrocities towards women. The youth should be made aware of the effects of such gender based violence.”

United Nations leads 16 Days of Activism from 25th November to 10th December against Gender-Based Violence campaign, which aims to raise public awareness and mobilize people everywhere to bring about change. The theme of the campaign for 2017 is “Leave no one behind: end violence against women and girls.”

This event by the Pillai students and Soroptimists helped create awareness on the issues of gender equality, human rights and all kinds of violence, especially against women and girls.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Celina Joy, President-Soroptimist International Bombay Chembur said, “Advocacy in all forms is the best way to highlight the ill effects of violence against women and tackle the mindset of society ”.
