On the International Women’s Day, Soroptimist Excellence Award 2024 was conferred on Ms. Sumaira Abdulali, Founder of Awaaz Foundation for her exemplary contribution in protecting the environment. This award is instituted to honour a woman achiever whose work carries a significant socio-economic impact on the lives of women, children and society in general.

Ms. Abdulali’s tenacious advocacy and pioneering efforts in combating noise pollution and eradication of sand mining for safeguarding the environment exemplifies the true spirit of environmental stewardship.

Ms. Abdulali was kind to accept the award at the hands of our founder president, Dr. Daphne Pillai, accompanied by Club Extension and Membership Officer Munawira Kotyad. The award carries a citation, a trophy and a donation by SIBC to the foundation. The event was conducted by PP Dr. Celina Joy and PAC Ms. Yvette Lee also made a short presentation on our club’s flagship projects over the years.

The award ceremony was held at Dr. K. M. Vasudevan Pillai Campus, Panvel and was attended by the members of SIBC, faculty members of various institutions in the campus and the students of Architecture, Engineering and Management Studies. Ms. Abdulali addressed the gathering and inspired the audience by sharing insights about the working of Awaz Foundation, the perils of noise pollution as a major health issue. She also explained how environmental issues are linked to the welfare of women and children who bear a greater brunt arising out of its degradation.
