Soroptimist Excellence Awards
Soroptimist International Bombay Chembur celebrated International Women’s Day on 8th March, 2022 by honouring Ms. Lara Jesani, an independent litigator with her primary practice based out of Bombay High Court and National Green Tribunal. She takes up cases of human rights violations, in particular constitutional, environmental, development, and anti-corruption matters, death penalty / criminal cases, and in defense of human rights defenders. In particular, she represents project-affected communities and civil society organizations. She was presented with the SI Excellence Awards 2022 for her exemplary work in the field of human rights. On this occasion, she addressed the audience virtually on the topic ‘Gender Justice and the Indian Constitution.’ The audience for the webinar was Soroptimist members from all over India and from our Friendship Links along with students and teachers. Her talk was very motivational as she spoke about her journey and her work during the COVID pandemic which has been highly appreciated.
The main aim of this project is to acknowledge and recognize empowered women who through their work are able to change the lives of many in society. This project helps start a conversation on gender rights among other human rights thus spreading awareness on various issues. The recipient of the award helps in spreading awareness and educating others about various issues and also becomes a role model for many women
Post the event, a donation of Rs. 10000/- was made to Parcham Collective, an organization that works with young girls belonging to the Muslim community living in slum communities in Mumbra, Mumbai. The organization through various activities that they conduct, aim at building life skills among girls.
