World International Justice Day 2024
SIBC in collaboration with Women Development Cell of PCER, Chembur, organised an online session on the occasion of World Day of International Justice, for the students and teachers of the college. The theme for this event was “Advancing Women’s Rights and Social Justice in India: Progressing towards Gender Equality.” The keynote speaker for the event was Ms. Kalyani Tulankar, a lawyer and a trained mediator, Bombay High Court and NCLT.
She explained the Indian Constitution’s provisions for gender equality. She emphasized on Fundamental Rights, Directive Principles of State Policies, Fundamental Duties, Equality Before Law and Equal Protection of Laws Ms. Tulankar highlighted on Articles 14 and 15 of the Constitution, which provide for equality before the law and equal protection of laws. Further, Ms. Klayani elaborated on the various rights women possess and the challenges they face, including, Social and cultural barriers, Economic disparities: Limited access to resources and opportunities. Ms. Tulankar discussed the prevalence of violence against women, including domestic violence, sexual harassment, and honor killings. The issue of property rights was discussed, highlighting the Hindu Succession (Amendment) Act, 2005, which grants daughters equal rights to ancestral property. Workplace discrimination was a critical point, with discussions on the Equal Remuneration Act, 1976, and the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition, and Redressal) Act, 2013.
